The Suicide Prevention Research Team works to spread awareness and reduce stigma throughout the community, as well as foster increased social connection on FSU’s campus. Recently, our team has facilitated trainings for undergraduate student leaders teaching a course for first-year students. These trainings were designed to equip these student leaders with the tools to cultivate social connection in their classrooms, as well as assist first-year students with strengthening their own social connections on campus. Members of our research team have also led discussions at local elementary and middle schools regarding the importance of mental health and looking after those who may be in need of support. Through these endeavors, the Suicide Prevention Research Team has aimed to bolster social connection at both Florida State University and in the Tallahassee community more broadly.
