The Promote Successful Transition to Higher Education and Work for Minority Individuals research lab focuses on fostering inclusion and equality for individuals with minority backgrounds in work and higher education through three threads: a) workplace or academic accommodations, b) support for transition from school to work or postsecondary education, and c) cultural competence and social justice through innovative approaches such as ecological perspectives and mindfulness. The lab includes undergraduate and graduate-level students.
Dr. Shengli Dong
Dr. Shengli Dong is a Professor of Psychological and Counseling Services in the Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems at FSU. His current research focuses on workplace and academic accommodations, transition issues to work and postsecondary education for youth with disabilities, mindfulness in counseling, multicultural counseling, and social justice issues.
Dr. Dong has published around 60 papers in various professional outlets such as the Journal of Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin, Career Transition and Development for Exceptional Individuals, Journal of College Student Development, and Mindfulness. In addition, he has conducted more than 90 professional presentations at international, national, state, and local levels. He, along with his colleagues from Northeastern University and FAMU, has been awarded a federal grant (2022 to 2024) from the National Institute of Health to foster well-being and prevent depression for immigrant youth through using mobile health applications.
Dr. Dong has been nominated for the FSU Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award in 2004, 2022, 2023, and 2024, as well as the Inclusive Teaching and Mentoring Award (2023-2024). In addition, he was nominated for the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) Mentor Award in 2023).
Dr. Dong is an associate editor for American Educational Research Journal (2024–2027). He serves as an editorial board member for several flagship journals in his research areas, such as Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin, Journal of Rehabilitation, and the Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation. Furthermore, he serves on the Council on Diversity and Equity and Research Committee for the National Council of Rehabilitation Education. In addition, he is one of the founding members of Asian American Rehabilitation Association. Dr. Dong received the Sylvia Walker National Multicultural Award of 2020 from the National Rehabilitation Association.
Barbara Brannon
My research interests are broad and expand from topics about correctional/prison systems to developing quantum theories. Outside of academia, I enjoy nature by traveling around the United States whenever I can. Reading and art are also a large part of how I spend my time alone.
Savannah Fissenden
Savannah is a second-year M.S/EdS Clinical Mental Health Counseling student at Florida State University. Her research and clinical interest include exploring different intersections of eating disorder treatment for those seeking recovery while understanding how it affects individuals that identify as gay, lesbian, transgender, and/or gender non-conforming (LGBTQIA+). Aaron Weckesser
Aaron Weckesser is a sophomore at Florida State University studying Food and Nutritional Science and is a part of the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) program. Aaron’s research interests are centered around mental health and its treatments within underrepresented communities. Additionally, Aaron is interested in nutritional research specifically with eating disorders and their perception and treatment in underrepresented communities as well. Abigale Young
My name is Abigale Young. I am a sophomore studying behavioral neuroscience on the pre-med track. My research interests include studying the physiological basis of human behaviors and mental health. I also aspire to learn more about the impact that implicit bias can have on mental health as a whole. In my free time, I enjoy reading, painting, and practicing my guitar skills.
Alexis Kuykendall
My name is Alexis Kuykendall, and I am a first-year student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Florida State University. I received my undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Missouri. My research interests focus on the intersectionality of aging and workplace accommodations. In the future, I hope to become a counselor to young adults. My hobbies include drinking coffee, watching movies, and spending time with my four-year-old dog, Lilah.
Amirah Abuthahir
My name is Amirah Abuthahir and I’m a second-year Clinical Mental Health Counseling student at Florida State University, currently interning at the FSU Center for Couples and Family Therapy. Bryce Hickey
My name is Bryce Hickey and I am currently a senior at Florida State University majoring in Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences: Clinical Professions. I am passionate about healthcare and aspire to attend medical school after obtaining my undergraduate degree. I currently serve as the Director of Administration for the Florida State Medical Response Unit and work as a medical assistant. Dr. Dong’s research lab stood out to me for its focus on education and supporting both students who come internationally or have a disability. This research is necessary to find solutions for and aid these specific and sometimes marginalized populations. I most recently assisted Dr. Dong on a research project related to international graduate-level students, and how a partnership program helped alleviate barriers related to culture, language, coursework, and other facets. I am now assisting Dr. Dong on a project examining the role of AI technologies in relation to students and those entering the workforce who have disabilities.
Chioma Opara
Chioma is a doctoral student in the Human Development and Family Science program. She is passionate about understanding and improving the health and well-being of individuals and families. Her research focuses on enhancing relationships among family members, establishing healthy lifestyles, and promoting general well-being and health. Chioma aims to achieve these goals by researching mindfulness, mental health, and the well-being of individuals, families, and the community. Her work helps people become more aware of their mental health and feelings, and manage their thoughts more effectively, preventing them from becoming overwhelmed.
Gabriela Tovar
My name is Gabriela Tovar. I am a first year MS/EdS student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Florida State University. My research and clinical interests include prevention of anxiety disorders in children, effects of stigma on minorities, multicultural counseling, and sport and performance therapies. During my free time, I enjoy being outdoors and going to the beach.
Gwyneth Clark
Gwyneth Clark is a second-year student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling graduate program at Florida State University. After graduation, she plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Clinical or School Psychology. Gwyneth is interested in researching ADHD in adolescent girls; specifically, the effects of the disorder on mental wellbeing and the differences in presenting symptoms between boys and girls. Valeria Veras is a Junior at Florida State University studying Political Science and Social Science Education. Kamari Gouin
Hello, my name is Kamari! I am a first-generation student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling master's program at Florida State University. I received my undergraduate degree in psychology at Florida Gulf Coast University where I gained experience as a school psychology intern and undergraduate research assistant studying parent-child dyadic interactions. My current research interests include exploring faculties of human connectedness through topics relating to effective communication strategies, empathy development, mindfulness, multicultural/intercultural competency development, and dyadic peer interactions. In the future, I plan to pursue a doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology. My ultimate goal is to equip the next generation with knowledge and services necessary to become well-adjusted contributors to society. She is pursuing a double major in Psychology and Sociology at Florida State University, with plans to graduate in 2025. She aspires to continue her academic journey by obtaining a PsyD in Counseling Psychology, with a focus on mental health issues."
Susana Garcia
Susana Garcia is a first-year Clinical Mental Health Counseling student at Florida State University. She received a Bachelor of Music Therapy degree from Florida Gulf Coast University and is a board-certified music therapist. Presently, her research interests include accessibility and stigma related to mental health services, specifically within minority or underrepresented groups; advocacy and community education for mental health services; and Hispanic populations within the military. My name is Alanis Villaquiran and I am currently a Junior at Florida State University in the UROP program. My research interest overall is anything in the field of psychology because I find there to be such a diverse range of important topics that could help better understand this field that still has many questions to be answered. As for clinical interest, I am interested in the mental health sector because the same as I said for psychology there is still so many questions that have yet to be answered regarding mental health, and being able to do research on this topic could help advance or bring us one step closer to understanding and bettering this sector. Caleb Byrant
I am majoring in psychology (minoring in criminology). I am on the drum line at Florida State University and have been the section leader for the past two years (2020 and 2021). My hobbies include: drumming, working out and going on runs, reading, and listening to podcasts. I work as the percussion instructor for Wakulla High School, so one of my main interests is mental health disparities in teens and adolescents. Another clinical interest of mine is addiction and substance abuse counseling.
Ian Ostrowicz
My name is Ian Ostrowicz. I have many research interests that speak to me, but I am mostly interested in the study of individuals with disabilities. I am a Personal Care Assistant (PCA) for a quadriplegic and it has allowed me to broadly understand the hardships these individuals have to face every single day. With this in mind, I focus mainly on how to better the lives of disabled individuals physically and mentally. Other topics in STEM research will always be something that I can learn about extensively, but research in impaired individuals will always be close to home.

Lauren Sakowitz is a second-year Clinical Mental Health Counseling student at Florida State University working toward becoming an LMHC. Her interests in the field include working with individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities and college students. Madison Mullins
My name is Madison Mullins and I am a Junior at FSU majoring in Behavioral Neuroscience. I am currently on the Pre-Physician Assistant track with the goal to attend PA school after graduation. My research interests include global health with specific interest on topics such as mental health, vaccination, and autism spectrum disorder in disadvantaged communities. I am also interested in research on education and accommodation for disabilities. A few of my favorite hobbies include hiking, soccer, and flag football. Olivia Eto received her master's and educational specialist degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Florida State University. She conducts research on a variety of topics related to suicidality, disabilities, and race-based trauma. She is specialized in working with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and learning disabilities. Olivia is a psychometrist and counselor at Psychological Center for Growth and Development.
Paige Hespe
My name is Paige Hespe and my research interests broadly include the mental health disparities documented in transgender and gender non-conforming populations, including the study of this population’s disproportionately higher rates of suicidality, self-harm, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and sexual trauma. I am interested in methods of prevention against these health disparities, etiology of these disparities, and treatment for these disparities.
Pamela Sirota
Pamela Sirota is a student at Florida State University double majoring in Political Science and International Affairs. Pamela is a member of the FSU Honors College, Zeta Tau Alpha, Phi Alpha Delta, and the Honors Legal Scholars Society. Her primary research interests lie at the intersection between public health and public policy. Most of her research to date has focused on the provision of workplace accommodations for individuals with disabilities. She has also worked on projects examining the effectiveness of peer partnership programs among international students. As an intern for a leading Florida cancer center on their government relations team, she hopes to continue conducting research in accommodation for individuals with disabilities both at the legislative and organizational levels.
Sarika Sennath
During my Sophomore and Junior years at FSU, I was able to work directly with Dr. Shengli Dong on conducting research about the factors that affect the decision of hearing-impaired employees to request accommodations. This piqued my interest and introduced me to conducting a thorough research project and seeing a topic from many unique perspectives. The research that I was able to do adds to a body of research that helps people and this is the type of research that I would like to continue to do. I would like to be involved in medical research especially in the branch of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Outside of the lab, I enjoy playing tennis, playing the piano, and painting.

Theo Meros is a master’s student in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and hopes to pursue a PhD in Counseling Psychology. Theo interns at Florida State Hospital and plans to perform research on the violent offender population.
